Our History
In the Spring of 1992, a small group of business
owners from the Back Mountain, Pennsylvania area, came together
to discuss the idea of forming a local organization comprised of
business and professional people. Just a few months after its inception,
the Back Mountain Business Association had dozens of members, and
a calendar of events.
The original goals were:
To provide a directory of members and distribute
it throughout the Back Mountain.
To provide a voice on issues that affect businesses in the Back
Mountain region.
To sponsor events at which members can become acquainted with one
another and their products and services.
To encourage members to do business with one another.
To coordinate special events and sales.
To inform students at College Misericordia, Penn State Wilkes-Barre
and their families of the range of products and services that are
available in the Back Mountain.
The Back Mountain Business Association took on its official form
as a registered non-profit corporation in September, 1992 just a
few months after a steering committee began to plot its course.
As it has matured, Back Mountain Business Association
has sponsored community events and supported local institutions,
in varied ways:
The Back Mountain Business Association made the
original donation that began the CD-ROM collection at the Back Mountain
Memorial Library.
Contributed funds for the construction of a new children's wing.
Back Mountain Business Association funded the initial work to beautify
the triangle at the intersection of Routes 309 and 415, arguably
the most visible patch of land in the Back Mountain.
Perhaps the organization's most popular activity is an annual children's
festival, which attracts hundreds of children and their families
each year who have a chance to win special prizes while being entertained
by a DJ and magic show.
Since 1997, the association has sponsored a children's party that
immediately follows the annual Dallas Kiwanis Halloween Parade.
The annual Business Fair, held each spring, gives members the opportunity
to display their products and services in a relaxed setting that
is open to the membership and the public.
The membership directory, distributed each year with the Guide to
the Back Mountain, provides a free listing and description of each
member.
Regular meetings and occasional mixers afford the opportunity for
members to develop business and personal relationships, and encourage
sharing ideas.
